All About the Fox Point Sunset Road Race
The Fox Point Sunset Road Race is the primary fundraiser of the Newington School Supporters. We are a group of dedicated Parents, Teachers, and Administrators. Our mission is:
To provide a forum to enrich, support and facilitate communication and interaction between parents, teachers, and administrators.
Our goals are to insure good communication within the Newington Public School community and to facilitate and encourage opportunities for academic enrichment. This is accomplished in a variety of ways; from organizing and funding and Artist-in-Residence program, supporting the schools technology plan, to providing programs and funding to enrich and support the curriculum at the Newington Public School.
The Newington School Supporters are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are a small group supporting a small K-6 school. Fundraising at a small school can be difficult. Most school fundraising programs involve students and parents buying or selling items or food from catalogs. With a limited number of families these fundraisers prove difficult as we cannot always meet minimum order requirements that these fundraising companies set for their programs. The Fox Point Sunset Road Race has become our single largest fundraiser for the Newington Public School. Held the first Saturday after Labor day, this race has provided funding for the Newington Public School's technology program, helped purchase new playground equipment, supported visits from local authors, and has funded the Artist-in-Residence Program as well as other smaller programs during the school year. Currently the Newington School Supporters are committed to a revitalization of the school's library. Support of the annual Fox Point Sunset Road Race is integral to support our goal of facilitating and encouraging opportunities for our children's academic enrichment.
Are Sponsorships and Race Registration Fees Tax Deductible?
As a non-profit organization, charitable contributions to the race are tax deductible. However there are specific guidelines that must be met.
A summary of IRS Publication 526 states:
Sponsorships and race registration fees paid to non-profit organizations ARE tax-deductible,
but under the following conditions:
- Sponsorships made or registration fees paid without expectation of receiving something
in return are deductible.
This means if an item such as a t-shirt, cash award, complimentary race entry for a sponsor or other perk is given; then the Fair Market Value of that item(s) must be deducted from the amount to be claimed as a contribution. - The race fee or sponsorship does not exceed the percentage of Annual Gross Income allowable for charitable contributions
- Raffle tickets and other items sold on race day are not tax deductible as the amount is paid expecting something (food, prize) in return.
Non-profit races must provide a receipt for receiving the donation for the runner to use. The email receipt/confirmation they receive when registering online will suffice for this purpose. A runner requesting receipts would need to do so individually from each race, the series as a whole cannot provide this for all the races registered for.
The Newington School Supporters will provide receipts if requested for tax deduction purposes. We politely ask that you request them before the race and we will mail them out after the race. That will allow us to include the Fair Market Value of any prizes or cash awards received.
